Q. My two front teeth appeared to be thinning and therefore appearing darker for the last few months, however recently I managed to look behind my front teeth using a mirror and saw that there is a black mark on each one. Is this acid erosion and how do I get rid of this problem?
A. You need to review your diet to prevent this worsening and see your dentist

Q. Hello Dr., I read about enamel erosion on front teeth and I believe that this is my case, i have a few yellowish/transparent spots on my 2 front teeth. I read from one of your replies that I can’t restore the color with diet or habit, however what can I do to prevent more erosion and to at least keep it as is. thank you
A. Check your diet for acidic foods particularly fizzy drinks diet or otherwise. This is the cause of most erosion so reducing this will help prevent further enamel loss

Q. I had a person on an ed website ask if brushing your teeth after purging (vomiting) is harmfull to your teeth. Is it or is that a myth?
A. Yes it is harmful to your teeth. This is because with are bringing up acids when vomiting and if you brush your teeth straight after this, this is very abrasive to your teeth.
Kind regards

Q. Hi i am wanting to ask my four front teeth seem to be eroding quite quickly i have suffered acid reflux but am now on medication and this seems to have calmed down do you think this is because of reflux that my teeth have gone like this? and if so is there any way to sort this out.Kind regards.
A. Reflux causes strong acids to break the teeth down you could have tooth coloured material or porcelain placed over the teeth to strengthen and protect them.

Q. I am a UNITED STATES 43 male, and just had checkup. I have reflux and have ground teeth into the denton. Kanines are level w/others. molars have very wide fillings. backs of front teeth have been acid washed to denton, i guess. told i need 14 crowns immediately. front upper 6 +canines+back molars. $12K. is there some insurance I can buy to offset this? or is it too late, since I already saw the DR. I am scheduled for this friday. Please respond ASAP. URGENT to know. what is your advice? do you think this is urgent/necessary??
A. If teeth have severe acid erosion the options are onlays or crowns depending on how much tooth is present. I am a British dentist and do not have knowledge of your insurance schemes

Q. Hello! So here’s the deal: I am getting my braces off in about 2years,and I already have stains. I need to get them off like pronto before my mom notices. And I don’t have time to go see a specialist without her knowing. And I only have like $30. What should I use to get rid of them?
A.
Probably you need to see a hygienist – if you manage to do this you should stop what ever is causing the staining, such as smoking, coffee drinking etc

Q. Hi i have got acid erosion on my teeth and i was just wondering what would help it because i am tired of always having stains on my teeth. the dentist puts filling on them but in like a month it wears off
A. You might need to consider veneers if the rosion is very bad. these don’t stain and will look good for many years

Q. Hi I am quite upset about recent findings from 2 different dentists that I have severe acid erosion and bruxism. 2 years ago I had no problems at all, although my diet/drinking habits have not changed. There are no problems with my gums or x-rays and I have never had a filling so now I am gutted about this. What I’d like to know is that I have been told different things by different dentists about the effects of swimming on teeth. I swim 3 times a week for 1 1/2 hours a time. This has been a new thing over the last 2 years. Could this be the problem and how can I check the PH levels of my local pool? My current dentist is insisting that I grind my teeth but I do not believe this to be true but at one time I was on a high dose of Citalopram and have read that this can cause grinding and I think it did in my case. I was on this for about 3-4 years. I am also a vegetarian and have been told this is the problem!!!??? so confused. What can I do and can I prevent further damage. I cannot stop swimming as this is now for me a form of anti-depressant. I am miserable. Thanks for you help.
A. From your post it would seem that the two key factors here are the medication, which may trigger grinding, and your diet
Many vegetarians have diets with high acidic fruit content eg oranges, lemons, grapefruits
The combination of teeth grinding and acid erosion can cause rapid tooth destruction.
I would recommend going through a diet analysis with your dentist and at the least a nightguard to prevent further grinding on already weakened teeth

Q. My teeth have over the past few months become very thin looking and almost transparent looking and people have mentioned they look this way. I was wondering if anything could be done about this and how much it would likely cost at an NHS dentist.
A. Your thin teeth ar due to either acid erosion or a physical wear problem. The dagnosis needs to be made first. Following this bonding, venering or corwning may be required .

Q. Hi,I have become increasingly worried about my teeth over the past few years, as they have become very worn away and sensitive due to what I have been told is Acid Erosion. Not only have they become transparent at the ends, and seem to be getting progressively worse, they are also starting to chip and I have cracks down the middle of my incisors. I have been to two different dentists, and they have both told me that if anything my teeth are so good that they are too long and are just wearing because of this. I was also told that I grind my teeth in my sleep and I should wear a night guard.. I was wondering if it is possible to use bleaching trays as a form of guard that I recently used, instead of seperately buyin a night guard. I’m very dissatisfied with the dentists I’ve seen as they seem to be baffled as to why my teeth are so transparent at the ends, and don’t think it’s my diet as I don’t eat citrus fruits etc that claim to cause this acid erosion. I do use a special toothpaste called ‘Sensodyne Pronamel’ to help strenghten the remaining enamel and prevent further damage but, I really don’t think it has made any difference… I have always had really good teeth but, these problems are really starting to depress me and everyone who is speaking to me in person are starting to notice these problems especially the acid erosion. Please write back to me, as from what I have read on this site, you are a very good dental surgeon. Regards
A. hi, many thanks for your email. if you do grind your teeth in your sleep then this is what will be causing the wear on your teeth and the see through nature on the tips. it may not be due to acid erosion. however it is difficult to say without weeing your teeth. you could wear your whitening tray as a temporary night guard, but to have a specific hard splint made to help the grinding at night would be a better alternative. if you email back with your location i will recommend a dentist who could help you.

Q. im 20 years of age and i’ve never been to the dentist.my teeth are all eroded and yellow.luckily for me,i may be seeing the dentist for the very first time this year, but before then i would like to know the solution to this problem and if i stand the chance of restoring my white teeth back.they look quite embarassing and i’ve had it for 10years now.please help me out.let me know all that must be done.thanks a lot.
A. You sound as though you have extreme wear of your teeth. This is typically caused by acid in someone so young. The cause of this damage needs to be diagnosed prior to having any dentistry carried out.

Q. hi, i have noticed my teeth’s enamel has worn away slightly on the bottom half of my two front teeth leaving grey patches and are quite sensitive. i don’t really want to get veneers as the upper half of my front teeth are in good condition. My dentist put it down to a combination of tetracycline medicine used for a long time, fruit juice and over brushing i was just wondering what the best option would be to repair the grey areas i asked about white fillings placed behind the teeth, but i heard you cant have them if your bottom teeth bite behind your top teeth is this true? and also i have been using home whitening trays will this remove enamel due to acidity? cheers
A. Hi Firstly the home whitening won’t remove enamel it will just bleach out the stain/discolouration of the teeth. This may also help to reduce the greyness due to Tetracycline. White fillings are a temporary solution in most cases and are not suitable for everyone. Maybe veneers might be your best solution in the long-term

Q. I want to thank you for answering my question so quickly..however when you said tooth bonding is reversible..did you mean that I could go back to my natural teeth? I heard that the acid solution they paint on your teeth before they apply the composite bonding ruins your enamel forever…and you could never go back. Is this true? Please tell me it’s not true!
A. hi
the acid solution is milder thaqn lemon juice,
your source is mistaken , just scaremongering tactics im afraid

Q. My daughter has been told that she has lost most of the enamel on her teeth it has worn away and they need bonding to prevent them becoming sensitive, I a concerned that she is taking this at face value without rewsearching the long term effects etc. Is this a well known method of dealing with this problem? She says its the fizzy drinks she had as a child Could it be the cider she now drinks as she had fine teeth till she got to 18!
A. It could definitely be the cider that she drinks. Tooth surface loss can be caused by teeth rubbing against eachother, acid damage either from the stomach or from external foods such as fizzy or fruit juice drinks ,or can be caused by a bite problem. Bonding can improve the situation . As a dentist I would be looking for clues as to whether this is an ongoing problem or a historical problem. The key clue is if the wear area are stained and the cause is due to previous acid drinks then these areas may well be stained. Fresh areas mean it si likely that the problem is ongoing.

Q. I have had braces before but my teeth have fallen back into original position and I’m considering getting 6 Month braces,My dentist said I have acid erosion not serious though,Will it be OK to get braces if I have already had them and have acid erosion? Thank you
A. in theory there is nothing to stop you having braces, but a high acid diet will undermine tooth structure and appliances in the mouth will give potential for more damage at a quicker rate if you do not address the underlying cause of this.
once your treatment has finished it is important to have a decent retainer which you must wear as advised or your teeth will relapse again.

Q. Hi Komal, I have really bad acid erosion and my teeth have worn down and started to chip away. Is it possible to receive NHS treatment at Guy’s Dental Hospital? My dentist has referred me to another Dental Hospital but it has been months and I have still not had a reply. Many Thanks in advance
A.
You could see if you could register with Guy’s hospital. I am not part of the faculty, I teach on a private post graduate dental programme there.
The best way to do it is to ask your dentist to refer you Guys as well and see what they can do

Q. Since losing my partner to cancer I have no confidence. I have always hated my teeth, but now I’m obsessed. My dentist tells me, even with lottery money, nothing could be done due to my bad gums. I recently had my teeth whitened in the states & already I’m a little happier, although a long way to go. Am i to accept my dentist advise Or is there something that could be done Please reply Fond regards
A. There is almost always something that you can do. You do need to start with the basics, the gums are the foundations, without healthy support even the best work will fail.
I recommend one or two second opinions to check out your options, it could be very varied. If you mention the weblink I can provide a free initial consultation at the StJohns Dental Practice in Birmingham City Centre. Follow the links provided.
Appearance is very important to your self esteem, you are right to consider it. Do also keep life as balanced as a whole.

Q. Hi i am 23 years old and can honestly say my teeth are disgusting from drinking extreme amounts of sugar drinks and smoking. I am so so scared of the dentist as i have been treated so bad in the past as dentist can’t believe how bad my teeth are. Over the past 2 years i tried to put things that had happened in the past behind and get some treatment. I have spent over £3000 and am now done to 7 teeth on the bottom and a broken one in bedded in m gum and 11 on my top if you can call them teeth. Most times a dentist tries to save a tooth which then a month later has not worked so i end up having it out. I am at the stage where i say to myself i want all my teeth out and have a false set as i am in so much pain and it never seems to end. Please help and let me know what my best options are as private treatment now seems to be my final option.
A.
You need to go for a full examination with a dentist that you feel at ease with. At this stage they will give you a full treatment plan for the treatment needed to give you a healthy mouth and get rid of your pain.
Once this treatment has been completed, you will then be in a pain free situation and can think abut what can be done to improve the appearance of your teeth. A denture cn be made for you to fill in the missing teeth. If you improve your oral hygiene by brushing a flossing twice a day and seeing a hygeineist regularly, then bridges may be a solution for you gaps. These a fixed restoration unlike a denture. I think that at your age this would be a nice option for you but if you do not improve your oral hygiene first of all the dentist will not place them for you and second of all, if they do, they will fail causing you further problems.
You need to cut back on your sugary drinks.
You should be able to get most of the above treatment on the NHS and privately, so would just be whichever you opt for.
Kind regards
