How long after root canal treatment are you fitted with a crown?

June 6th, 2011
Q.

Hi Doctor,
I was assessed by my dentist and
I have to undergo root canal treatment on one of my lower tooth. My dentist has told me the procedure and that the crown is put on within a few weeks after treatment but I went to get a second opinion at a private dentist and he told me the permenant crown is put on 6 months to a year after the initial treatment so that they can check if procedure has gone well and no bacteria is infected the area. What would be usual way to do root canal?

Thank You

Has teeth whitening given me craze lines?

June 3rd, 2011
Q.

Dear Dentist

I had my teeth whitening in house using 27% Hydrogen Peroxide about 2 months ago. I noticed I have craze lines since. Can a high percentage cause crazing?

Also can you feel crazes in teeth because I can hold ice in my teeth and literally go straight from hot to cold nicely and eat nuts etc? But sometimes in the wind Ill breathe then Ill wet my teeth after and they tingle/burn. Is this a sign of cracked teeth or just sensitivity? As I feel I have damaged them now due to the whitening?

Regards

Is my change of mouthwash the reason behind my white tongue?

June 3rd, 2011
Q.

I have a slightly loose lower molar which is not painful but affects the bite and seems to have abraded the edge of my tongue. My dentist recently performed de-scaling and deep cleaning and suggested leaving it for a few months in anticipation that healing would tighten it up again. He advised me to use corsodyl for 2 weeks, in addition to my usual brushing (oral b 9000, bicarb paste) and flossing (waterpik) regime.
A few days later, whilst on holiday in Wales, I was unable to obtain corsodyl so I tried listerine cool mint instead. This produced an uncomfortable burning sensation, followed by change of taste and an astringent-like sensation when tasting wine, fruits or cheeses, coupled with a dry-mouth feeling despite normal saliva flows. I stopped using the listerine after 2 days but the uncomfortable sensation remained. Two days later my tongue showed white spots, particularly adjacent to the loose molar and a local pharmacist diagnosed oral thrush. After 5 days of daktarin oral gel there was no significant improvement and so I visited a dentist, who confirmed thrush and prescribed Nistan. I have almost completed a 7-day course and although there has been some improvement I am still not symptom-free. I shall, of course, visit my own dentist or GP after this vacation, but is it likely that the loose molar is acting like an ill-fitting denture and initiating/prolonging the thrush? Am I not diabetic, have not taken antibiotics or any other medication and (as far as I know) am not immuno-suppressed, being generally in good health with fast-healing wounds. Thank you in anticipation of your kind advice.

My new crowns are too white, is there anything I can do?

June 2nd, 2011
Q.

Hi Dr. Verma,
I just had 14 lava (porcelain) crowns permanently cemented on upper 14 teeth and they are TOO white. They did not look this white when I signed and approved them. Is there any way you can tone them down once they are on permanently? I am a bit nervous on how to ask current dentist about this as they spent a lot of time with me trying to choose the correct color white. There are simply too many colors of white to choose from –

Thank-you,

Can I get veneers free on the NHS?

Can I get veneers fitted for free on the nhs? My local dentist have told me it will cost me 650.00 to have two veneers fitted on the front of my teeth as I have a big gap between my two front teeth and I don’t like the look of it. I had braces to close the gap between my two front teeth when I was much younger but as I’ve got older the gap has just got too big, please help me? Please also let me know if there is any such help/grant available to help with the cost of veneers, I am currently not working and on benefit?? Also receiving Child tax credit and hold an nhs exemption card.

What can I do about my infected gums?

June 1st, 2011
Q.

Three months ago I visited my dentist because I had a slight gum tenderness around one of my front incisor teeth. He suggested that I should rub Corsodyl around it twice a day. This treatment didn’t seem to work so he took an X ray which revealed that there was an infection. Probably five years previously, this tooth had been capped. He then suggested that he should attempt a root canal treatment, which he did ten days ago. Sadly, for me he said that he had not been able to do this successfully. I think he said it was due to “corrosion” ! He said come back and see me on the 9th June and we will decide what to do. Obviously, I do not wish to lose this front tooth; – would it be a good idea to be referred to a specialist endodontis ? I do not have any pain – at the moment – a very slight discomfort when I eat. I f you do suggest that I go to a specialist should I do this before 9th June and are you able to recommend someone really good in the area OR has it to be London ? Many thanks indeed for your help.

I have severely ground down my teeth, what do you suggest?

May 31st, 2011
Q.

Hello Dr.  All of my teeth are very badly ground down due to excess grinding of calcium substitues. I very much would like to ave a beautiful smile. I am embarassed by my teeth. Some of them are also chipped. They are discoloured, just awful.

I know you have a brilliant reputation for putting patients at ease, as this is also a problem for me, dentist phobia.

Anyway, Dr. , if you were able to help me, I can’t express how I grateful and happy I would be. I realise that you are a specialist, but my teeth are so bad that I doubt even you can do anything with them.

I feel depressed and down, just because of my teeth and not being able to smile whenever there is something to smile about.

Yours sincerely
