Q. Hi I had a root canal less than 2 years ago and the crown broke last week. I went to a different dentist as I had moved out of town. He ex-rayed my tooth and told me that I should have a bone graft and a dental implant. I was reading this site regarding implants and am wondering now if he could tell that I need a bone graft by my ex-ray. I have no pain because the original treatment was for a root canal. I am going to do the implant, however am wondering if he could assess the need for the bone graft prior to the surgery. Also, what is the down time normally associated with this procedure?
A. Your dentist might be able to tell you need a bone graft if the gum contour is poor or there is a chronic infection causing bone loss. there are 2 types of bone graft. A block graft taken from the lower jaw is perhaps best used for larger bone defects and will leave your mouth sore for 2 weeks. A bone graft using artificial bone, usually animal derived can be used for smaller defects but leaves less post-operative sweling and soreness.

Q. Hello Doctor, I have gap between my 2 front tooth and was thinking of veneers. how big or large will each tooth is going to be ? is it going to look fuuny or natural. I have a missing tooth thats why the gap thank you in advance
A. This all depends on the size of the gap between the teeth, if the gap is very large then the veneers will look too wide. In these cases orthodontics works better

Q. After years of not looking after my teeth, smoking and drinking far too much coca cola my teeth are a state. There going brown around the gums and quite a few of my back teeth have massive holes in them. It doesn’t help that I’m terrified of dentists. Im only 19 and I’m so paranoid about them i even try my best to talk without showing my teeth. Im worried a cosmestic dentist would judge me because of this. I’m also terrified about going and the cost although I’m willing to put up with the pain and price to get my confidence back. It’s hard to concentrate on looking after then when there in such bad condition already.
A. Its important for you to see someone you trust straight away. a good dentist won’t judge you he/she will just look to give you the confidence back you have lost with the detrioration of your teeth. Try to find someone recommended by a friend and see what options they can give you. it will be worth the it in the end

Q. Hi Andrew, are implants a feasable option for correcting existing teeth? I have had braces/aligners and I am still unhappy. I assume a dentist will be reluctant to remove healthy teeth? Thanks,
A. It is possible to remove healthy teeth to correct their position although you will need to seriously consider this option as it is generally reserved for extreme cases not treatable with orthodontics

Q. My 13 year old daughter has a large white mark on her front tooth. She is very self conscious of this and people often say to her that she has something stuck on her tooth. It covers about 40% of just one tooth. What is the best way to get rid of this mark? Our dentist was quite dismissive and said she should wait until she’s 18 to do anything, but didn’t really tell us what could be done?
A. I see a lot of children with these white marks it is very common it is often due the tooth not forming correctly. You should find a dentist who has air abrasion so the outer surfaces can be gently removed and then a cosmetic filling can be placed to block it out. I have carried out this procedure out on children as young as 10 as they were getting bullied at school.

Q. Hey, I want my teeth to be as white as possible, what products are the best for this? I want my teeth to be bright white, thanks.
A. The best natural way is by deep tooth whitening using products from your dentist such as enlighten. However if you want incredibly white teeth you can have porcelain veneers made, however this involves cutting your natural teeth down, you can then choose how white you want your teeth. Be aware when teeth are to white they look very cold and false. I would advise whitening first.

Q. Hi Dr Patel, I am hoping you may be able to give me some advice; I have recieved conflicting info so far and I’m unsure! Basically I have veneers to my upper teeth and unfortunately one of them now needs a root canal on it as it was damaged during the prep for the veneers and is very painful. My dentist says the rct can be done from the back of the tooth and not affect the veneer. However another dentist has told me that the tooth will likely go dark and show through the veneer, spoiling the look from the front. I am really worried about this. Is there a technique that can be used to avoid the tooth darkening after a root canal? And are you aware of similar cases where the veneers appearance has not been affected after the rct? Many thanks for any advice or info you can give
A. If the root canal is successful and then sealed well the tooth will not go dark however root canal treatment involves hollowing the tooth out so it is weakened due to this it may need a full crown with post. You should be prepared that you will probably need a crown but try to have the root canal treated from the back without damaging the veneer. The veneer can sometimes be removed first using a laser and then re cemented.

Q. my son is 6 years and 9 months old .his upper canine teeths fell off 8 months ago .still there is no sign of teeth eruption .wondering if anything needs to be done.lower canines fell after upper ones and they erupted completely. he was a thumbsucker .
A. He is still young for his canine teeth to be coming out they normally erupt around the age of 9. If you are concerned ask your dentist to take an x-ray to assess that all the teeth are present and developing normally.

Q. I have 2 missing teeth at the top either side of the middle two. My two front teeth are also receeding. It sometimes hurts when i brush them. I was wondering would i be able to get veneers on the top teeth, if so how much would it cost. My bottom teeth are not too bad, but i really hate them. Im embarrassed when people see them, and hate smiling!! Need to do something…
A. You need to have you teeth assessed by a cosmetic dentist to get the best result you may need your teeth moved by orthodontics first of have some gum grafting to improve the look. You could have implants to fill the missing gaps.

Q. hi there dr.andrew moore. i fell over last night my 2 front teeth one is broken and one is wobbly. and other one next to the wobbly one is also broken with nerve showing. my front tooth that is broken got filling done to it and my other broken one with the nerve showing is gonna get a root canal. i just want to ask what is the best way to treat my wobbly one? due to my dr said to leave it and see what will happen to it. i would like to hear other advice. thanks
A. If it is very loose it should be held firm by sticking it temporarily to the adjacent teeth. If it is only slightly loose then it would be best to leave it.

Q. hi i have extreme overbite and they said that i need retainers so how long will i need them
A. After orthodontics I recommend removable retainers to be worn 6 months day and night, followed by 6 months at night after that I like them to be worn at least 2 nights per week forever.

Q. Hi Almost 20 years ago as a child I had an accident where I broke my 2 top front teeth and chipped the edge of the adjacent lateral incisor. these were all infilled with cement (or something like that) and veneered. The dentist at the time did say that by age 18 or so I should look to get them capped. They;ve never really given me problems and although I have been aware of gradual deteriation through wear, I think they are on the verge of breaking now. Is their any benefit to capping them over veneering if they seem to last so long anyway? What would you recommend? Thanks
A. I would probably recommend staying with veneers if they have lasted a long time, caps or crowns need the teeth to be drilled down more than veneers although they are stronger.

Q. I was told by my dentist that i needed a veneer on my front tooth as it is chiped on the surface. However someone has told me that i would need all teeth in my smile line does as the tooth which is chiped is on my smile line and this would be free on the NHS as i am only 17 years of age. Please could you confirm this for me.
A. Unless you are undergoing extensive cosmetic treatment which is not sanctioned by the NHS then you only need the one tooth treated either by a bonded white filling or porcelain veneer.

Q. I had a filling replaced on my upper right 2nd to last tooth. then had a piece of on top of the tooth fixed on the bottom left. after ward my bite was so off my front bottom teeth hit my top on the inside. went back and the dentist said it wasn’t from the work I needed a night guard. went to another dentist who said the same thing. sill don’t think they were right because my bite got worse to the point I couldn’t chew gum anymore because it bothered me so much. went back to my dentist recently and he took a drill to the back of my front teeth and shaved some off to correct it. now the back of my front teeth are very sensitive. is that normal and should that have been done. because now I am thinking he drilled off the enamel please let me know your thoughts.
A. I can’t really tell without seeing you to analyse your bite. If the bite does feel normal now the sensitivity should get better over the next few weeks

Q. hi, i have milk canine tooth, while the adult one traped in a gum, and i have some crowding (all in upper jaw). can 6 month smile braces work for me? thank you.
A. You really need traditional braces. The impacted caine tooth needs to be exposed and dragged down if your teeth are crowded I would recommend Damon Braces as in 80 % of cases I do not need to take any natural out.

Q. I have a crown that covers 3 teeth, looks like 3 teeth and now 2 of the tooth posts under the crown have broken off in the crown? Please is there a way I can still have the crown? I spent so much on it, I am still paying the loan, I don’t know what to do.
A. i think you are talking about a bridge. If the posts are broken the foundation has gone so the bridge might be unsaveable. Perhaps you should go back to the dentist to see what they can do if it isn’t that old they might be able to fix it for free??
