Can titanium rods suport as tooth roots

October 28th, 2009

Q. I have been told that after a root canal in one of my lower molars, that now the root has come away from the canal and the other root cannot support the tooth on its own, and therefore the tooth needs to be extracted. My tooth doesn’t feel particularly loose, I’m not in any pain, and I don’t particularly want to loose it and get an implant. Is there anyway that titanium rods can be used in keeping the natural tooth?

A. hi many thanks for your email, if the tooth has split at the roots, although the tooth may not be causing you any pain the consequences of leaving the tooth and not having it extracted could be dyer. my advice would be to have the tooth extracted and then a dental implant as any other option will not be long term.

Can a chip in porcelain bridge repairable?

October 28th, 2009

Q. I just had a 6 unit full porcelain bridge placed in December of 2009, I just noticed a very tiny chip in between my two front teeth. Is this repairable?

A. Thanks for your question, it is possible that the dentist would be able to repair the chip without removing the bridge.

Need long lasting remedy for discoloured gappy teeth

October 28th, 2009

Q. I have had braces and yet i have a small gap between my two front teeth, my orthadontist said i should go and see my dentist for bonding or venners as there is nothing else she can do. i was just wondering which technique is better and longer lasting and if they are stain resistant. Also i may consider home teeth whitening kits, and was wondering if they the veneers or the bonding will whiten also. morevover can you please tell me the NHS prices fro these and if there is a significant reduction in prices if you are a university student.

A. Thanks for your enquiry, firstly these procedures would be classed as cosmetic, and so would probably not be available on the NHS. If you are considering having your teeth whitened, then I would encourage you to do this before you have any restorations placed on your teeth, as whitening only works on your natural tooth. The material which is then used would be matched to the whitened shade of your teeth. There are benefits to both tooth bonding and to veneers, as tooth bonding is a less invasive treatment however veneers would lead to a more aesthetically pleasing result in my opinion. I hope this helps.

Teeth look long after gum receding

October 28th, 2009

Q. My top four front teeth have been on a denture for over 20 years. During that time my gums have receded quite a lot. Both teeth on either side of the four now look silly as the teeth themselves look very long as the gums have receded so much. I have quite a wide smile/laugh but over the years I have tried to limit this as I am very aware of how noticeable the ‘long’ teeth are. Have you any ideas??

A. You probably need a new denture with the teeth correctly placed and the correct amount of gum

Can reconstructing one of the veneers match the rest?

October 28th, 2009

Q. Hi, Just looking for some advice.. as my dentist id not available for 2 weeks and im very worried.. I have veneers on my teeth (put on 6 months ago) and I have had a bad fall at work and chipped one of the very front ones. I cant believe ive been so unlucky as they looked really good before this. Im worried that if the chipped veneer is replaced it wont match the others as it will be made at a different time. It would look awful if one tooth was a different colour to the rest. The lab that did the veneers is in New York so visiting the lab is not an option. Is there any way to make a precise match? Your advice any any reassurance would be great, thanks

A. Thanks for your questions, your dentist and the laboratory he used will have a record of the shade and materials that were used for your veneers, and so should be able to get a very good match when they replace it. I hope this puts your mind at rest a little.

What is the best way to cover discoloured teeth?

October 28th, 2009

Q. I damaged my front tooth when i was younger this made it slack I was then given root treatment and in time my tooth started to discolour, it was then suggested i get an veneer, this venner looked good but after 3 yrs it chipped and I needed to get it replaced,my second veneer was only in for 2 weeks when it cracked from the inside.I was then given my third within 6 months this one became noticeably darker, my dentist advised me to get yet another, I am just home from appt and this veneer is slightly better but at my gum area all you can see is blackness. I did say that I was’nt happy with it but he expressed that is the best he can do with what he has to work with, my own tooth is black and yellow as he showed me. i am wondering if you could advise on any other options. thanks

A. Thanks for your questions, you may wish to consider having a crown on the tooth instead of a veneer. Although it would involve more preperation of the tooth, a crown would be much less transparent hence consealing the discolouration. I would recommend that you speak to your dentist to gain his professional opinion on the merit of this in your case. I hope that his helps.

What are the symptons of acid erosion?

October 28th, 2009

Q. My two front teeth appeared to be thinning and therefore appearing darker for the last few months, however recently I managed to look behind my front teeth using a mirror and saw that there is a black mark on each one. Is this acid erosion and how do I get rid of this problem?

What are the risk in pulling out wisdom teeth?

October 28th, 2009

Q. Are there any risks in getting wisdow teeth pulled from only one side of the mouth? Like loss of equalibrium or anything ? And would deep rooted nerves in wisdom teeth cause tinnitus ?

A. You need to ask the dentist doing the surgery as there a a number of common risks and some uncommon ones. ther are some evidence based guidlines from NICE ( Nat institute of clinical excellence) on when its a good idea and when its not.

Need a need cosmetic dentist in South Wales

October 28th, 2009

Q. Hi, I’ve been reading about teeth bonding as a possible solution to acid erosion. My front teeth have signs of what appears to be accid erosion, although my dentist said there is no problem, but my two front teeth are translucent nearly half way up. Could you please recommend a cosmetic dentist in South Wales (Newport or Cardiff) for me to arrange an appointment to further discuss my problem? Thank you.

A. hi many thanks for your email, i unfortunately do not know any dentists personally from the area i can recommend but if you do a little research i will be happy to look at the dentist for you and give you my opinion on if the dentist will look after you on a cosmetic level.

Is bone graft painful and is it safe?

October 28th, 2009

Q. I’ve always had lovely teeth & visited the dentist regularly.About a year ago I noticed that every time I brushed, my gums would bleed. My dentist suggested various gels for gum disease, but now my top front tooth is slightly twisted and I still bleed. After having some x-rays Ive been told I have lost bone tissue and the next tooth may also come loose.I asked about implants. It has been explained to me that because there is a loss of bone an implant would not be possible at the moment.A bone graft/implant has been suggested. Can you give me some information on this.Where is the bone taken from? Is it done under general anisthetic? I am extreemly worried. I want my teeth to look good and I dont like pain.

A. Thanks for your questions, it is possible to carry out the procedure using an artificial bone, to prevent the need for a graft from another site on your body. This procedure can be carried out under local anaesthetic, although some clinicians will be able to offer Intravenous sedation, if you feel this would help you. The aartificial bone is then allowed to integrate for a period of months, before the process to place the implants would begin. I hope this heglps.

Can implants replace my dentures?

October 28th, 2009

Q. Dear Rob, I have lost about half of my teeth. I had a set of dentures made up a couple of years ago, but find them impossible to wear, they are extremely uncomfortable. To compound this problem, all of my front teeth were damaged in an accident a number of years ago, and i have a habit of grinding what remains of them. The are becoming quite ‘threadbare’ and sensitive. I am also not in a position to fund the extensive dental surgery I would require to prevent further damage. I believe there are certain criteria that the NHS would consider adequate medical justification for funding implants, and I was wondering if a patient such as myself would fall into this group. Please advise. Many thanks,

Need a celebrity smile from my not straight teeth

October 28th, 2009

Q. hi im on benefits and really not happy with my teeth i have to fang teeth and there not really streight how would i go about having a celebrity smile thanks

A. Thanks for your questions, I would recommend that you attend a cosmetic dental practice for a consultation. there are practices which offer a free initial consltation, to enable you to discuss the treatments which would be necessary to acheive the results you desire, without any financial commitment. Many practices now offer interest free credit to enable you to spread the costs.

How can front teeth overlap be corrected?

October 27th, 2009

Q.  I have a major problem with my smile, i’m 26 and my 2 front teeth overlap, when i turn to the sides and smile it looks like i have straight teeth till i stand face on, Also i have the same problem with my bottom front teeth as they too are crooked so its very rarely i have pictures taken. Is there anything i can have done but the thing is i’m on benefits so something that can be done on the Nhs if its possible, Thanks

A. Thanks for your questions. It is possible that either Orthodontics, braces etc., or veneers could possibly correct your problems. However these procedures are considered as cosmetic, and as a result of this, it is unlikely that they would be funded by the NHS. You may wish to considered visiting a cosmetic dentist who offers free initial consultations, as many are able to offer payment plans to spread the cost. I hope this helps.

What is the best treatment for teeth which are coming out?

October 27th, 2009

Q. I have only 8 teeth on the top.I think 3 need coming out,i am really scared of having treatment, what would the best to have done.Thank you

A. If it is the loss of teeth your frightened of then you might wish to consider replacement of the teth with immedaite implants as these will feel the most natural.
If it is the actual extractions then you could consider sedation to help you relax during treatment.

What is the possible treatment and cost for front teeth moving forward?

October 27th, 2009

Q. I had braces two years ago, I am 17 years old now and I currently have a permanent fitting at the back of my two front teeth they were placed their in order to prevent my two front teeth from moving forward. However the opposite thing happened now I am starting to see them move forward and they look really ugly. So I was wondering how much would it cost to get my front teeth fixed?…..and what else could be done to them in order to improve their appearance?

A. hi
it would mean that your retainer has not done the job it was intended to
the amount they have moved would determine costs for treatment – if minor expect a cost -1500
if major could be approx 2700
after they are straight we would supply a retainer that would cover the teeth at night that prevents movement in either direction which you would have to wear 2-3 nights a week
