One of my crowns has broken can it be replaced

Q. I had two crowns (porcelain and metal) fitted 10 years ago to my front teeth. One broke recently. The dentist is unable to remove the posts from the gum in order to replace the crown. He did a composite on the broken tooth, but alas that has damaged my self esteem as it looks very unsightly. What is the best way to deal with something like this? I would like to replace the crown.

A. It should not be necessary to remove the exiting post from the root of the tooth, as long as everything is healthy you should be able to have a new crown fitted over the existing post thereby improving the aesthetics. If your dentist cannot do this then maybe seek a second opinion
