My Young Son Plays Rugby And Is About To Get Braces. What’s The Best Way To Protect His Teeth?

Q.
My son had one of his front teeth broken with a cricket bat when he was 9 (he has about half the tooth left). He had it filled to rebuild the tooth but has knocked it out or lost the filling 5 times since. He is now 12 and plays rugby. What is the best way to protect his teeth? Are there any mouth guards that have added protection for protecting already damaged teeth? Is there a long term solution that will make it stronger and at what age should that work be completed? He is due to be referred to the orthodontist to correct his ‘fangs’ in the next month.
Many thanks.

Hi. I would ask for a reputable cosmetic dentist to look at repairing the tooth again. There may be something to do with his bite or maybe a habit (eg finger nail biting ) that could be causing the de-bond but in most cases these repair restorations can be predictable and long term. In the future the tooth may require a veneer or maybe a crown (has the tooth had the nerve removed).

It would be best to place the repair before he has braces fitted and a sports mouth guard would be a pre-requisite, especially if he plays rugby. NOTE you’ll need a guard that can be remoulded often as his teeth will be moving throughout the orthodontics and rugby can be very dangerous if he’s wearing braces (due to the risk of tearing his lips or cheeks)

So maybe a second opinion for now. Happy to see him in London if it’s close and we can have our specialist orthodontist take a look as well. Kind regards, Mark.
