My top set of dentures do not stay in place and I have gum disease?

Q. I have Gum Disease and already have a full set of upper dentures. I am having a full bottom set in a few weeks time. The top set do not stay in place even with adhesive and I wondered what I can do about this.

A. I am sorry to hear of your problems with your upper denture. Sometimes a reline of the fitting surface can help to make the denture stay in place. However often the ridges that are left are so shallow that the denture will never be properly secure.

A great solution to this problem is to place 4 to 5 implants into the upper jaw( metal roots that become bonded to the surrounding bone). These can then have attachments screwed into them to allow your denture to have something to hold it in place. This will make your denture incredibly secure and you can throw away all the different types of messy glues that you have to use at the moment. The whole process takes about 6 months from start to finish. This is the best way in my practice I have found to solve a poor ridge problem.

Hope this helps.
