My tooth was removed leaving the roots behind, to minimize bone loss

Q. I recently had a lower right molar removed when root treatment failed & as it has an opposing tooth, I asked about the possibility of an implant. The tooth was removed leaving the roots behind, to minimize bone loss I was told but when I was referred to an implant specialist, she was surprised to see the roots. I’ve just had the roots removed and I’m left feeling that I’ve been charged twice for the same thing. Surely bone loss happens over a longer timescale than just a few months?

A. Hi. Sometimes leaving the roots in place for a few months is useful for keeping the bone. I personally only charge for the removal of the whole tooth rather than the crown or the roots.
