My son will be 9 years old in couple of month’s time and still there is no sign of any upper permanent teeth

Q. When my son was 2 years and 8 months old his 4 front teeth were pulled as his teeth were chipped and yellowish (may be because he was breast fed till he was over 2 years) and during that period he also had a fall from a swing and broke two his front teeth. After that he would complain about the pain. So we took him to the dentist ,took his X-ray and then the dentist advised us that if we leave his Milk teeth those might affect his permanent set and so we had to pull out his four milk teeth. His lower teeth were all good. Well, now my son will be 9 years old in couple of month’s time and still there is no sign of any upper permanent teeth. We had his X rays done and the dentist said that since he still haven’t lost any of his lower milk teeth we have to wait. Just a month ago his lower tooth is bit wobbly and just last week we noticed that another tooth has started to come out at the back of the wobbly tooth. So can you please advise what can be done for this? Will my son get his permanent teeth? Is there any replacement that can be done? Please suggest. Thankyou

A. It sounds like the permanent teeth have got trapped (impacted) you need to get your dentist to take x-rays of the teeth.  It is difficult for me to advise you without seeing your son but it sounds like the milk teeth need to be removed to try to allow the second teeth to come out.  The second teeth usually erupt between 4-8 years old so he is certainly developing a little slower.  If your dentist can not advise you I would suggest asking for a referral to an orthodontist.
