My NHS upper denture is rubbish would a flexible denture be better?

Q. Dear justin
thank you very you very much for your reply, i guised implants would be very expensive. could i please ask one last question? as stated the N H S upper denture i had fitted 9 months ago is rubbish i can not eat or talk with them, mind you some of my friends find this very comforting. On returning to my dentist he recommends a flexible upper denture that doesn’t need any of that nasty fixing gum. he is a great guy my dentist but i don’t understand his accent he’s from the middle east, i have talked to the head receptionist she tells she has never seen this type of denture.
im 74 Justin and for £450 this sounds a great denture i would be very grateful for
your opinion . sorry for the typing this is my first month using a computer

p s the bit i did understand is the upper denture has no roof
pushes against the gums and stays put.im very grateful to you Justin for your assistance
JT

A. Hi JT

With dentures not really being my field – I can certainly see that a plate with no roof would be advantageous as regards comfort, speech etc. – really you just need to determine whether your dentist can make this to your satisfaction.

Kind regards

Six months ago, I had upper and lower dental plates made. They were the first I had and were very basic. They replaced 3 teeth in my lower set and 5 in the upper. I have tried very hard to get used to them without reall succes. My dentist suggests that I consider flexible dentures but the cost will be between £800 and £1000. I am a private patient with and NHS and i am with Denplan insurance. Is it likely that they wouod cover the cost of these flexible replacements, havig already accepted the cost of the original set

Reg Says :

I may be able to answer some of your questions regarding the design of your flexible denture. Because of its lightness and strengh flexible dentures can be made a lot smaller. The design Justin mentioned with no roof is probably a skeleton shape like a chrome denture. It has flexible clasps for retention instead of relying on suction of the plate with the palate.
I would remind patients especially those on Denplan or simliar that they should only be paying the Laboratory fee for the appliance. You might be surprised to find out the laboratory fee to the dentist for a completed flexible denture is somewhere between £130 and £200 .
Patients now have a legal right to request details of the Laboratory used to produce their dentures. Hope this helps.
Cheers

Kevin Says :

Agreed, all dentures, crowns and other laboratory made items (whether NHS or private) are supplied with a document called a ‘statement of manufacture’ or ‘conformity statement’, patients having dentures or crowns fitted by dentists should ask for this document before leaving a dental practise when the dentures or crowns are fitted.
This document will list the name of the dental laboratory, the quality level requested and the specific materials used to make the product for you, this document is important should you have any problems afterwards and want to identify who to contact.

Its time for a clear distinction between what the clinical fees are charged by the dentist, together with the laboratory fee to manufacture whatever quality of denture or crown is provided, crowns can be made by laboratories for as little as £18.00 in the UK, using cheap materials and labour

I have a few teeth missing at the back but the rest of them are in ok condition, you will probably have to see my before you can make certain but what is you general opinion? Many Thanks

Kale Says :

Certainly veneers or ceramic restorations can likely be considered for esthetic enhancement in this case as long as the teeth are healthy.

I have fixed upper bridges replacing 432/234 with the 3 being the pontic. These were fitted 30yrs ago and are now beyond repair. I feel my only optionis the removal of the retained roots and a partial denture fitted. I do not want this to be acrylic as I feel I know it would be very difficult for me to tolerate it. I had thought about chrome cobalt but recently heard of valplast. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. I know it is dificult without an initial examination but hope I have supplied enough information tohelp you reply Thank you in anticipation

It sounds like you may need a new set making or you may need to use additional retention in the from of implants to hold the dentures in place. these are often needed when there is insufficient bone to create enough retention for the dentures. Ask your dentist for advice

Desiree,
I have referred people for implant retained lower full dentures to the dental hospital on the NHS before and have had mixed responses. It appears to be a decision based on local funding allocation, whether you could be used as a learning/teaching case and also, why you have lost your teeth to begin with (ie. periodontitis – especially in those with diabetes and smokers) is regularly taken into account; For example if you had been a victim of a RTA or possibly cancer related surgery you may under a multi disciplinary team qualify for dental implants on the NHS, whereas if it was due to periodontitis probably less so. Nevertheless it may be worth inquiring. I hope this helps.

Hi all,

Really refreshing to read I am not the only one with teeth issues.

I have quite a few missing teeth partly due to Diabetes and I am only 43, the front looks quite bad and I have anothe tooth which is becoming loose. I already have a bottom NHS dental plate which is okay but still find it difficult to get used to especially when eating. I really need something in the upper as well but I hardly wear the bottom denture, I keep hearing about flexible dentures which my dentist didn’t mention – are they commonly used by dentist and what is the difference between them and NHS or Private ?

I have been this evening and been offered either a Sticky Bridge in the top or another Upper Denture to replace possible 1 or 2 teeth – I just want something snug fitting, small and comfortable ?

I can’t afford Implants but would certainly choose them if on NHS.

Many thanks
Andrew

riding accident very many years ago when dentists did not have
the finesse expected by customers and just yanked everything
out. I had the allergy tests by a hospital and I am allergic to
amongst other things the gum and plastic that are used in
NHS dentistry. I am post a triple heart bypass and have just
been diagnosed with diabetes. I may have another 10yrs to
