My New White Fillings Are Causing Sharp Pain In One Of My Teeth, Why Is This?

Q.
Hi Mark, I was just wondering if you could help me? Today I got my silver fillings replaced on the upper top left side of my mouth. The fillings were about 20 years old, and replaced with white fillings.

All the fillings are fine, except one tooth. This tooth is giving me sharp shooting pain, when my tongue brushes over it. If I chew, the pain is so bad that I tear up. It doesn’t matter what I chew, it’s a sharp shooting pain….a banana I had with my lunch made me cry!!

The dentist told me that he put some “insulation” under the new fillings. And my old silver fillings were changing appearance, particularly their colour. He also said they had had cavities under them. Can you tell me why I’m experiencing this pain now?

Hi, thank you for your question. To me it sounds like you might need a root canal treatment – this is a common complication following dental treatment where there are cavities deep inside the tooth. Please go back to your dentist to have a diagnosis of the problem. I hope this helps. Regards

Mark
