Q. Hi, I wanted to ask about gum disease which I have suffered from for years now, I am 33 years old. I have been getting my teeth cleaned every 3-4 months, I use a sonicare brush, I regularly floss, but my gums won’t stop bleeding. I am very concerned now as I hated the way my teeth looked so I started Invisalign in March this year. When I wear the aligners, I often can see blood through them, I told my dentist this but he told me this can happen with Invisalign. I don’t know what I can do to stop this problem. Its got so bad that I avoid going out unless I have to as my gums bleed so often. I am missing out on so many things due to this. Do you think I need root canal treatment? I have had ex-rays done by 3 different dentists and all of them have said my teeth are alright, and that I just need to keep my regular routine of cleaning my teeth. Please can you advise me of what treatment you would recommend. Thank you
A. Bleeding gums is not a good indicator of the future health of the tooth. However no bleeding is a good indicator that the teeth will not have future problems. So you are correct to get bleeding gums checked out, but having had 3 opinions it is probably safe to assume that the long term risks seem under control. mouthwashes like peroxyl or the gengigel products might help to reduce the bleeding. Trial and error for the product you like best.
