My Gums Started Bleeding Recently, I Want To Know How Long It Takes Each Stage Of Gum Disease To Take Hold?

Q.
Hello, Dr Moore. About a month ago now, I noticed that my gums began bleeding after brushing. This kept happening for around a week or so. I visited my dentist and he gave me antibiotics. I will see him in four weeks from now.

I have also now started using the recommended mouthwash. My question is how long does it take to go from minor gingivitis to periodontal disease? Approx how long would it take to get to that stage if unchecked?

P.s if you are at periodontitis stage, can this alter your face?

What are the tell tell signs that distinguish each stage? Thank you in advance for your consideration.

It should get better after a few days if you start to brush and floss more thoroughly. I would try to see your practice Hygienist as soon as possible to get this checked out. If left unchecked, periodontitis can lead to the loss of bone which holds the teeth in place. It would be difficult to describe each stage, try searching the internet for images of different stages of the disease and it will give you a much better idea of what the different stages of the disease can do to your oral health.
