My gums have started to recede and it’s really embarrassing. Is there anything that can be done?

Q. Hi, I have got quite a big smile and I have always thought my teeth were my best feature. I must have been brushing too hard because the gum line has receded on the left side of my mouth. This is especially true for one tooth in the bottom left hand corner of my mouth which is giving me a lot of pain. The gum around my left top front tooth has receded a little and food keeps getting trapped between the tooth and the gum line. This is really embarrassing and is stopping me from going out with friends or eating in front of anyone without having to run to the toilet between every course. I am 25 and I don’t want to have to keep worrying about this. Is there anything that can be done? I don’t have a dentist at the moment as I have a bad experience a few years ago and I’m nervous of going back. Any help would be great.,
A. You need to find yourself a dentist and get a referral to the dental hygienist to assess your gums and she can give you advise on oral hygiene products to help prevent this.
