My gums are turning a dark greyish blue black. I do smoke. Is there something wrong?

Q. About a year ago I noticed my lower gums by my four front teeth were turning a dark greyish blue black color. I do smoke. My teeth nor gums are not sensitive or painful but recently I noticed my upper gums around my front teeth are now changing to this color too. Is this something I should be very worried about like cancer or is it from smoking?,
A. Dear Enquirer, Without seeing you it is difficult for me to give an exact diagnosis. Sometimes I see patients in my practice that are smokers presenting with a similar problem. Dark areas around the gums may be present in African/ Asian patients, but that is normal and nothing to worry about. As you’ve noticed this getting worse over a year, it may be a sign that you have gum disease with bacteria getting trapped under the gums and causing a blue/black colour and smoking is a major cause of gum disease. I would advise that you find a dentist as soon as possible who will be able to carry out a thorough examination and exclude cancer as a cause and confirm why you have this discolouration. I hope this helps, Sunita
