My Dentist Says That I Need Surgery To Remove Part Of My Tooth! Are There Any Other Alternatives?

Q.
Desperate: That’s me! I have a front left tooth which has previously had a root canal and a crown. Over the past year or so the crown has had to be re-cemented due to loosening up. Now it seems I have a root fracture, an infection which has left me with a constant lump at the top of the gum and again the crown is loose. My dentist recommends minor surgery to remove and replace a part of root which he hopes will then hold a crown, I am on tender hooks and am dreading the prospect of this not working as the thought of having a front tooth removed (although I have dentures to the sides) feels me with dread! Any suggestions? many thanks.

I think your dentist has recommended the ideal treatment option. Quite often, when a root fractures far along the root, the tooth needs to be removed and then replaced. If the fracture is higher then sometimes the top of the root can be exposed and a post and crown placed; I think this is what you’re referring to? If you do not have confidence in either the procedure or the dentist then either ask your dentist for alternative options before committing or seek a second opinion first

Best wishes
