my 6 yr old daughter has a large overbite is there any option for her other than having surgery

Q. My 6 year old daughter has quite a large overbite and shows a lot of gum when she smiles. she has developed what is known as ’shark teeth’. My dentist has expressed a concern as when she puts her teeth together you cannot she her bottom teeth. When I was 18 I had extensive surgery on my jaw – including breaking my bottom jaw tobring forward and having an incision made in my top gum to reduce the showing of gum. Obviously my daughter has inherited my awful teeth. Is there any other option for my daughter other then surgery – bearing in mind I had this treatment 12 years ago, has orthodontic treatment improved withou the need of as much surgery??

A. See should be seen by an orthodontist early as appliances are now available to help the jaw grow the correct way reducing the need for radical treatment. I guess she’s still a bit young at the momnet but it would be worth getting an opinion from an expert
