I’ve Noticed My Teeth Have Started To Overlap, Would A Retainer Worn At Night Halt The Teeth Overlapping Further?
Q.
Hello Dr Hughes. I am 65 years old and have noticed that over the past few years, that the upper right teeth appear to be moving forward. I can see that now one front tooth appears to be beginning slightly to overlap in the middle. I do not want the tooth to move any further. At my age, I do not want to wear a permanent brace. My dentist thinks that a brace worn just at night may halt the teeth overlapping further. Would you kindly give me advice on this? Many thanks for your help.

Hi and thanks for writing in. If all you want to do is prevent any further movement, then a night time retainer would be adequate. If however you want to correct the problem then somewhere between 16 and 24 hours a day would be required, depending on the system you choose.

A night time ‘Essix’ retainer would work to help prevent further movement, as long as your teeth and gums are healthy. I hope this answers your enquiry. Kind regards, Dr Mark Hughes.
