I’ve Had Epilepsy The Last 12 Years And My Teeth Have Fallen Out. Would I Get Implants On The NHS Due To My Condition?

Q.
Hi. I have been on medication for epilepsy for the past 12 years. Over the years my medication as changed to cope with my epilepsy but this has caused my teeth to go bad and fall out. I am a 34 year old man with 3 children and it’s getting to the point where my kids don’t want to be seen outside with me. I have been offered dentures but I am scared that if I have them put in and the dentures are loose that I could choke. When the doctor told me I had epilepsy, all my dreams and all the hard work disappeared. Do you know whether the NHS would provide me with implants due to my condition?
A.
Hello and thank you for writing in. I’m sorry but implants are not readily available through the NHS. A well made denture, that fits well and accounts for the shrinkage of your gums shouldn’t cause you to choke so maybe try that first. You could also see if a local practice could offer you some kind of payment plan to make the payments easier on you. Why not find out more on dentures through this website? I hope this helps. Kind, regards, Dr Andrew Moore.
