Is their any treatments for removing Coffee Stains from teeth

Q. Dear Dr Caplan, I hope you can find the time tio answer my question. I drink a lot of coffee and was wondering if there is anything that can be done to remove coffee stains from my teeth? I have tried brushing my teeth with baking soda tooth pastes and I have even bought a special teeth whitening paste but my teeth still remain a little brown / yellow is there anything I can do to remove the coffee stains from my teeth? A.

A. Dear A,

Many people find that brushing alone will not remove discolourations of their teeth. These stains can be external ( coffee, tea etc) or internal ( the actual colour of their teeth).

If the stain in your case is purely on the surface I would recommend that you visit a hygienist to have it professionally removed. Be very careful about trying abrasive substances ( such as baking soda ) to remove stubborn surface stains as these can harm your teeth by removing the protective enamel coating irreversibly. This will make your teeth rougher and more likely to stain and could cause serious sensitivity problems.

If, once you have had your teeth cleaned by a hygienist, you are still unhappy with the colour of your teeth, bleaching your teeth may be a possibility. Your dental health and any existing restorations need to be checked first by a dentist to see if you are ok to have the tooth whitening. It is essential that the treatment is carried out by a qualified dentist. There are a number of cheaper alternatives but these either do not work or are potentially very damaging to your teeth.

I hope the above answers your question.
