Is root canal treatment a perm solution to prevent decay?

Q.
Is Root canal a permanent solution to stop further decay or harm to the tooth….. can the same tooth be root canaled more than one time….Does the ceramic cap used to cover the tooth permanent or can it come off…
A.
Dear Enquirer,
A root canal is necessary when the tooth has extensive decay that has affected the deeper pulp layer that houses the nerve. If you do not look after your teeth with good oral hygiene, then the tooth can decay further.
If the root canal has not alleviated any symptoms of pain/tenderness, then the tooth can be re root filled.
The ceramic cap/crown is permanent and is needed to protect the root filled tooth from further breakage.

All dental disease needs to be treated – ie decay removed prior or at the time of the bridge preparation
