Is it normal that my daughter’s tongue is badly indented since beginning braces?

Q.
My 13 yr old daughter is new to braces (about 4 mths) and her tongue is badly indented – is this normal & will it repair at all??
A.
Hi
Yes, it’s very common to get some indentation of cheek and soft tissues with orthodontic appliances. Are her braces next to her tongue or on the outside of her teeth? It may be the case that the indentation was there beforehand or as she is growing becoming more prominent? If the indentations are caused solely by the brace than it will go away after treatment has been completed but to be on the safe side I’d ask the orhtodontist who is treating her to have a look. Tongue scalloping can be caused by other things as well , teeth grinding being one, but it’s best to have a face to face consultation with the orthodontists for the best advice
Hope that helps
