Is it best to leave having a treatment if I am currently not feeling any pain?

Q. I had root canal treatment over 10 years ago and discovered quite sometime later, when I had an abcess, that I had a broken file in my tooth canal. I was advised to have an apecectomy but decided not to have this done whilst I was experiencing no pain. I recently had a slight tingling sensation and was worried that this was going to get worse so went to my dentist, he took an x ray and said I had a cyst at the end of the broken file and has now suggested that I see a specialist and have it removed but after reading lots of information about this procedure and that it is not always successful I am worried, if I am not experiencing any further pain or discomfort am I better off not having this treatment carried out. I am due to go away to Australia within the next couple of months and would like your advice as to whether I need this done and if so would it do any harm to leave it until after my trip. I am at present awaiting an appointment for a referral from my present dentist. many thanks,,
A. I think you should see the specialist, they should be able to tell from your x-rays whether it can wait or whether you need it sorting out ASAP
