I’m Unsure About Having Jaw Surgery And Extracting My Premolars. Would This Cause Me Any Problems In The Future?

Q.
Hey Mark, I have had a consultancy appointment concerning jaw surgery where I was told I would have my upper jaw broken in two places and worked on separately and then my lower jaw moved back. There is nothing particularly wrong with my teeth; I just have an open bite. The surgeon told me I will have to have my wisdom teeth out along with my premolars so he has somewhere to enter to do the surgery, I have read up on this and with other patients the surgeon has just entered through the root of the mouth. I know in the end it will solve the problem of my open bite but what are the repercussions of the first premolar removals? Will it affect the end product of my teeth alignment or cause any problems in the future? Thank you, I look forward to your reply.

Hello, thanks for writing and getting in touch. With competent orthodontic treatment all the issues should be resolved – the normal thing is to have orthodontics as well as the surgery you require. If you are still unsure you could always seek a second opinion to clarify things. I hope this helps you. Best wishes, Mark.
