I’m 17 And I Need Braces To Fix My Crooked Teeth. Can I Get Them For Free Through The NHS?

Q.
Hello Dr Moore. I’m 17 years old and I really need braces because my teeth are rather crooked and bent. Will I still get braces under the NHS for free? Or will I have to pay? The orthodontist where I live says that they only do free braces for patients 16 years old and under, does this mean I will have to pay? And it says on the NHS they cover you till your 18 years old? How many appointments will it take to actually get the braces? Thank you.

Hello and thank you for getting in touch. I’m sorry but you have to start before you’re 16 to qualify for free NHS braces. You could always start to save up now or find a practice which offers a payment plan. Try to find an experienced dentist in your area. If you’d like to find out more about the various treatments that may be suitable for you, you could scan through this website for more information. I hope this helps to clarify the matter for you. Best wishes, Dr Andrew Moore.
