If a crown is fitted to a back tooth which has not

Q. If a crown is fitted to a back tooth which has not had root canal work and is heavily filled, how does it attach to what is left? As the tooth is filled I don’t understand how any sort of post to anchor the crown can be made. Many thanks.

A. It all depends on the type of crown that is placed.
If it is a porcelain adhesive crown then it is bonded/ fused to the tooth so it needs very little retention.
If the crown  is a metal-ceramic crown then it i held in by retention and needs at least a couple of mm of tooth structure as well as a core to be cemented to.
root canal treatment can be carried out but this is obviously more destructive to the tooth
