I would like teeth whitening but I am a smoker
Q. Dear Dr Komal I would like to do a teeth whitening treatment. I would be grateful if you could answer the following two questions:1) I am a smoker, after whitening will I be prone to grey stains which will look worst than if I did not do the treatment?
2) I have a gum disease, is it possible to do whitening without having a problem? Thank you in advance for your advice.
A. I’m sorry to be harsh but if you have gum disease then the colour of your teeth should be the least of your worries.
It is very imporastnt to invest your time and money in the correction of your periodontal disese, which consequently, is very much affected by smoking.
If the disease is allowed to progress you will not only loose your teeth but you will also loose bone from your jaws and facial support.
My strong advice is to invest first in comprehensive periodontal therapy.
