I Was Due To Have A Root Canal But My Tooth Has Chipped. Can The Treatment Still Go Ahead?

Q.
Dear Dr Andrew Moore. I had my first appointment for root canal treatment on my left side bottom back molar a week ago, the dentist drilled and cleaned the inside of the tooth and put a temporary filling in. My next appointment is tomorrow. I grind my teeth in my sleep and yesterday I noticed a small chip in the back right corner of the molar – today a quarter of the tooth has come off! It has broken down near flush to the gum on that corner. Can the root canal still happen? I was told I needed to have a crown put in before – can this still happen with part of the tooth gone? Thank you for your time.

Hello and thank you for getting in touch. If there is still enough tooth left then the root canal can proceed with a crown fitted at the end of the treatment. I would need to see this in person to give you a more definitive answer however. Discuss this with your dentist and see what they say. In the meantime you can read more information on root canal treatment through this website. I hope this helps. Best wishes, Dr Andrew Moore.
