Does anyone know if tmj can cause widespread aches and pains or is it just head and neck pains? i am waiting for a mouth guard and i don’t feel its just that as i feel achy all over my body and shooting pains even in my legs etc. Thanks any advice please? x

Dear Christian It’s extremely difficult to say whether there is a connection as there are too many variables to take into consideration over large distances. We can never say never but it is HIGHLY unlikely.

Hi. I’m a freshman and the part of my cheeks under my ears just randomly started to hurt. It hurts when I apply pressure as well as when I try to open my mouth. When I try to open my mouth, it feels like there ‘s a pressure pushing my jaws back together. I don’t know what I have. What should I do?

Mandy Says :

You are probably grinding and clenching your teeth as you sleep. I recommend you consult with a dentist and have them make you a night guard or other type of bite appliance. This should relieve your symptoms

my teeth are wonky, twisted and overcrowded,4 top,4bottom,my mouth always feels uncomfortable and my jaw aches, this also ruins my confidence! what would be the best and cheapest way to fix this? im a single mother with virtually no funds! what can i do? i have seen a maxillo facial surgeon, who pescribed me pain killers for my jaw,but the medication makes me feel drowsey and sick! i proberly think about my teeth atleast 5 times a day and it depresses me.

Jonatan Says :

Its hard for me to give you an opinion without seeing you first, it sounds like the overcrowding of the teeth isn’t the cause of the ache in your jaw. You should try to speak to the Maxillo facial surgeon again and see if they can refer you to an orthodontist in your area for a second opinion

braces kind of changed my face shape and i dont like it… i have problems with my jaws now.. tmj (jaws clicking, face muscles hurt etc), i have sleep apnoea. i have trouble breathing sometimes when i sleep, and i get lots of headaches.. ive been told i have myofacial pain n i have back pain, and neck pain..what i think is i have weak lower jaw, jutting chin (chin too far forward), the upper jaw grew too much, receding lower jaw, disproportional lower face. what should i look into?

Chance Says :

Thats a lot of problems possibly not all of the them caused by the brace. Ask your dentist for a referral to a local specialist Oral Maxillo facioal surgeon

I had braces when I was young but did not wear my retainer, now 10 years on , I’m experiencing constant tmd such as headaches, back/shoulder/neck/jaw pain, jaw clicking, and i feel my face is deforming. I’ve been told to go to a Periodontist and an Orthodontist. If I go to a orthodontist /dentist and they suggest a splint, do I need medical insurance? What do you suggest I do? I’m also thinking of seeing an OMS. But surgery is my last option.

Quentin Says :

Try the splint first that works in 80% of cases

My local dentist doesn’t do braces and so I’m going to have to do some groundwork and find a dentist or orthodontist I think who offers some braces treatment that can help me. Is there a specific route I should take? What factors will I need to take into account other than cost and things like that? I don’t want to make a mistake and end up with someone who’s garbage. Let me know answers if you can.

Simon Says :

The best advice I can give you is to get you treatment done by an Orthodontist on the Specialist list, this means that they have done extra training (many years) to provide braces. As long as they are on this list then you can be rest assured that you should be in safe hands.

Recently after an orthodontist appointment (where I received a bracket on the top right 12 year old molar), I can barely open my mouth to consume anything. Prior to the appointment, my jaw was also clicking on the same side when I ate any bread-type foods. Could this be TMJ or just the jaw being over-stressed and strained?

Fidel Says :

It may be related to over stress or strain from opening wide. This should improve over time

Hello, I am a little bit embarrassed but I have an extremal low pain threshold and although I need braces treatment part of me is putting it off and the other is frantically searching the internet for braces that look the least painful. I had braces treatment for a few months when i was a teenager and they caused me so much pain my parents let me have them taken off. My dentist has recommended the Inman aligner but to me it looks like with the pushing and pulling system it would really hurt, is this true?

It uses very gentle forces but as teeth move they become tender.

How can I stop popping my jaw at night while I sleep? When i move my jaw back and forth it pops, and I do this in my sleep and it bothers my boyfriend. I dont no why I do it. My jaw doesn’t hurt at all.

Savion Says :

You are unconsciously grinding your teeth as you sleep. This is common. Perhaps a well made Night Guard, made by a dentist, will help by reducing your desire to grind. It may also help you from further damaging your jaw joint.

Hi. I am 16 years old just about to turn 17. I’ve been suffering a lot with a clicking jaw lately and my bite seems off. I was due to go for my check up and enquired about braces. My dentist said I can’t have them as the treatment I require would take a couple of years to complete, which means I have to pay for them. I thought I could get them free through the NHS if I was under 18?? I feel it’s very unfair and i need them to fix my bite not to look good! What can I do? My mum can’t afford braces…

I am sorry to hear about this issue. The best thing to do is to ask for a secomd opinion or referral into a local teaching hospital where they may be able to do the treatment on the NHS for you. Good luck
