I Suffer From Extreme Dental Phobia And I Haven’t Seen A Dentist In 15 Years. Will I Need Surgery To Extract My Teeth?

Q.
Hello Dr Moore,
I am a mother of 4 boys and I am 47 years old. I have extreme dental phobia. I haven’t been to a dentist for more than 15 years! Now my mouth is really in a pitiful condition. I am planning to visit a dentist now as I have lost my smile and being a teaching assistant I feel that it is an important tool to communicate with children.
I have a question: Most of my teeth are broken up to gum line. After 4/5 years my gum is now closed and the root I assume must be inside. I have never had any infection/ pain or abscess. Do you think I will need a surgical extraction? I wish I could get my smile back as I am willing to extract all of my teeth and get dentures.
Thank you for your precious time.

Thank you for getting in touch. It’s important to take these first steps. You should find a dentist who can offer treatment for anxious patients such as intra-venous sedation, they can give you all the details on what will work for you. It’s difficult to say without seeing you in person as to whether you need surgery or not. Find a qualified dentist in your area through a dental phobia search. I hope this helps. Best wishes, Dr Andrew Moore.
