I still don’t like the shape and size of the crowns what are my options

Q. Hi, When I was 20 I had crowns fitted to my two front upper teeth following an accident. The whole process was very traumatic and took many many months as I was under the care of a London Teaching Hospital. It was in the 1960’s and I am now 60 yrs old. I have never been happy with the look and think the crowns are too big. I would like a better look and smile ( though not hollywood dazzling!). My own local dentist suggested whitening which I had done 2 years ago- but I still don’t like the shape and size of the crowns. Could I achieve a better effect quickly and easily with replacement crowns? I wanted veneers but I understand they don’t work if teeth have been replaced by crowns already. thanks

A. I am sure you can get a much result.  It is difficult to give a list of options without seeing you.  I would suggest finding a good cosmetic dentist to assess you.  Your old crowns could be replaced with thinner better shaped ones.  Whitening will have no effect on crowns and certainly would not change their shape.  Veneers are thin shells placed over the front of your natural teeth so would not help you but new crowns would.  You may need to look at having more than just your front 2 teeth treated to get a better result.
