I Recently Got Laid Off And I Need Braces, Will The NHS Provide The Treatment?

Q.
Hey Dr Moore. I’m 20 years old and I have always worked but I recently got laid off and now I’m on jobseekers allowance, but I really need braces as my front teeth are not too bad but they hurt at times and it feels like they’re pushing each other out and it’s painful. So now they’re overlapping a little bit and I have been scared to go back to the dentist because the last time I had a really bad experience.  Just wanted some help and advice, Hope you can help me and offer any other suggestions. Thanks.

Hi, thanks for getting in touch. It sounds like you need to discuss the cause of the pain so you should consult your dentist as it’s unlikely to go away. I’m afraid braces aren’t available on the NHS as it’s considered cosmetic, you might need to consider saving up, so check around the various dentistry websites for the best deal. A lot of dentists these days are trained to deal with people with phobias such as yours, find one you feel comfortable with. Best wishes, Dr Andrew Moore.
