I have an overbite and have had braces

Q. Hi I have an overbite and have had braces when I was younger. This was only on my top teeth and it was not fixed braces just a retainer. I did have teeth taken out at the time. Over the years I have been to a few dentists who have advised that I would need braces to fix the overbite. I recently visited and orthodontists at my local hospital and they advised that I would need fixed braces for about 18 months, they would then operate and move the bottom jaw which will mean staying in overnight. After that I would need a retainer full time for 3 months and then only at night. Overall the process seems to take about 3 years. I planned to get married next year and really don’t want to wearing braces on my wedding day. What I would like is a second opinion, is this the only option?

A. Unfortunately it is very difficult to give you an opinion without seeing you.  In order to correct a jaw problem the only option would be surgery, treatments such as invisalign can improve the teeth positions and smile but have very little effect on your jaw.  The treatment you describe sounds the best and ideal for you but there are options which would just straighten your teeth.  The finished result would not be perfect as your jaws will still be in the same position.
