I Have Advanced Periodontitis. What Are My Options Regarding A Bone Graft For Implants?

Q.
Hi Mark. I have been told that I have advanced periodontitis. The dentist has said this is idiosyncratic and mentioned my body fighting it’s own bacteria? I know that many members of my father’s side of the family have had problems with their gums. He has also said I will gradually lose my teeth ( My bottom back 3rd molar is already loose) and would not be a suitable candidate for implants. I would like to know my options i.e bone graft etc. I am 37 year old ex-smoker.

Hi. You need to see a periodontal specialist as soon as possible. Your periodontal health needs to be established before implants should be considered and you’ll have to continue to give up smoking ideally too; this is a big factor in the presence of your gum disease and bone loss. You may also need to check if there are no other ‘hidden’ medical factors contributing (in additional to any plaque/bacterial control issues) such as undiagnosed diabetes, as one example.

Implants can be considered in a healthy mouth. Ask your dentist for a referral to the specialist – the periodontist may also be able to place implants for you. Regards, Mark.
