Q. Hi I have a significant overbite and a small lower jaw. I believe this was due to a dentist taking out the incorrect number of teeth when i was 8 years old. WHen I was 17 I went to an orthodontist who said I would need surgery to move lower jaw forward and braces which would cost £2000. I am now 25 and have been given the impression that I would need to pay for treatment and surgery as its not offered on nhs. Is this right? Also how long do you have to wear braces for before the surgery? Many thanks
A. Access to NHS orthodontics is determined by a defined scoring system called IOTN you can get a a referral from your dentist to an NHS orthodontist who will tell you your score and if you qualify. If an NHS option is available timescales can be discussed. To qualify for surgery & orthodontics you will need a stronger case than IOTN score alone.
