i had tooth extractions and orthodontic treatment 10 years ago is it possible to open up the gaps again for dental implants?

Q. I had orthodontic treatment 10 years ago, and made it quite clear at the outset that I did not want extractions. The ass who treated me decided that as I was a child, and my treatment was being paid by the NHS, he would send me to have extractions anyway because my teeth were slow to move. So slow, in fact, that he had the audacity to accuse me of not wearing my headgear enough at a time when, unless I wanted to wear the wretched device to school, there were literally no more hours in the day I could be wearing it. The gaps in my upper jaw, 10 years later, are still open wide enough to insert my thumb nail. The front teeth in my bottom jaw are twisted and have worn in an odd pattern which enables then to goudge lumps from underneath my tongue if I do not pay attention while eating. I hate my teeth so much now that smiling open mouthed is something that does not happen. Ever. Would there be any way the gaps could be opened back up for dental implants, or even a bridge? I was so upset at having the teeth removed that I still have them at home. What can be done to fix my bottom jaw? Is it too late to get recourse against this man? I hate my teeth; I hate the man who did this to me; and I really hope you have some advice to offer because I literally cannot go on with my teeth in the state they are in.

A. Hi H,

I am sorry to hear the problems you have experienced.

From what you have mentioned there are a number of options available to help you. You are indeed correct in that it is possible to have orthodontics to reopen the spaces to allow for a bridge or implant. However another course of treatment should also allow you to close the gap.

Without a clinical examination, I cannot tell you which is the best options and that is one you need to discuss with your dentist.

I think it is important that you do go visit your dentist so that you help solve the troubles you are having, and once you have been given the options you will be in the best position to take the appropriate action.

Hi

I it sounds like you have had a rough time. I have had negative experiences with orthodontic treatment as well and asked the same question ; is it possible to get back what I have lost and reverse my treatment? I had four teeth out and fixed braces aged 19 and it resulted in a worse appearance and various functional and physical problems. I am 28 now, and being 18, you are much more likely to find help from alternative orthodontic practitioners who may be able to offer you functional treatment. Good luck and leave a post on my blog if you like.

Take care

Marie

The costs are too variable to quote. best to start with referral from your dentist.

My dentist recommends that I get a brace to straighten my teeth, and I am very keen as my teeth are very crowded and misaligned. But I am finding it difficult to get an appointment to suit me at my orthodontist as her latestappt is 4pm and I work in a hospital Mon-Fri 9-5, although I can get away at 4 for appointments, this doesn’t give me time to get to my orthodontist.I have to give >6 weeks notice to take an afternoon off work. Do you haveearly evening appts or saturday appts? even just 5 oclock? I haven’t had any orthodontic treatment yet. Many thanks,

Good morning, I would like to enquire as to your implant services and costs. I have lost a tooth and an implant is looking like the best option, please could you advise of costings for one tooth on the upper molar section, isthe price quoted online inclusive of the titaniam screw or just for the tooth itself?, I have been advised I may also require a bone graft prior to the placement. Do you undertake bone grafts ?,if so please advise of the pricing range for this andthe cost of an initia consultation. I understand itis difficult to provide an exact quote without consultation, however a ballpark figure of costs would be great. Thank you for your asistance.

I am 14 months into my orthodontic treatment with braces. I had all four premolars removed as part of my orthodontic treatment, two at the top and two at the bottom and now all the gaps have finally closed, I have noticed that my mid-line is slightly off centre (2-3 mm). Is there a way to correct this now all the gaps have closed? I am worried that there is no space to correct this. Regards

You may need elastics to correct this. Speak to your orthodontist I’m sure they will know what to do.
