I had root canal treatment 15 yrs ago

Q. Hello, I had root canal treatment around 15 yrs ago on my front tooth and had a veneer fitted. In the past 3 or 4 years I have had a number of veneers and they either fall off or crack. I had one fitted 2 weeks ago and within days 2 large cracks appeared. My dentist is on holiday, so I consulted another dentist who advised that my current veneer is too big, too thick and the wrong colour. He suspects my dentist has removed too much enamel from the tooth and this is why I am having all the problems as the veneer is unable to bond with the tooth. He now suggests a crown. I have been avoiding this as I am concerned that it will look false and if my gums receed that the crown will look bad. Is there any alternative or can a veneer be fitted if too much enamel is removed? Thanks

A.

Hi, without seeing the tooth I can make some general comments

A tooth that has a history of restoration failure, in particular fracturing , is likely to have an underlying problem that needs to be identified.

Modern adhesive resins bond well to dentine underneath enamel, it shouldnt be a problem in itself. The shape and ammount (bulk) of tooth might be the issue.

All ceramic crowns & veneers can be similar in construction & appearance.
