i had root canal done now the tooth has a few cracks around it can i still i get a crown

Q. Hi there, i had a root canal done about 4 years ago… but never got a crown.. the tooth has a few cracks around it and black inside where the crack is… can i still i get a crown put on or do i have to extract the tooth or get it re-done… kind regards

A. I would advise that you have an assessment for that tooth. You ideally need a crown- quite right for you to mention it. Many dental practices, will assess the root filling and see if it is of a satisfactory standard before crowning the tooth. The tooth is slightly weaker after having root canal treatment, and therefore needs a crown for a protective measure- to prevent fracture etc. You need to see your dentist and discuss the tooth in question.

I am 22 years old and 5 years ago i had root canal in my front tooth due to a blow to the face. Recently I have began to get a dull ache in it which lasts all day. I have seen the dentist who has given me antibiotics which worked to begin with however 6 months later the ache came back. My dentist has re xrayed it but sees no sign of a fracture and recommends that i see an endodontist. Do you have any ideas of what the problem may be??
