I had my front teeth capped could teeth whitening affect them

Q. I have in the past been told I brush my teeth too hard which makes the gums receed. Today I have had several filled in and they look awful. My teeth are yellow in colour and the fillings are white, stick out, and I just want to cry. Was this because I am an NHS patient? I have asked before at my dentist about tooth whitening and was told to buy a pack from boots, which didn’t seem to have much effect as my two front teeth were capped 24 years ago when I broke them? Help

A.

Teeth whitening only whitens you natural teeth. I never advise my patients to buy teeth whitening pack from boots as they will not be as effective as teeth whitening offered at the dentist, if at all, as you have experience. The fillings you have had placed can be better aesthetically, perhaps seek an opinion of a private dentist as unfortunately cosmetic procedures are not available on the NHS. You can also ask him/her for information on their teeth whitening methods.
