I got braces because I have a baby canine in my upper jaw, I hate them, how long will I have to wear them?

Q.
Hi, I am an eighteen year old student. I just got braces about a month ago. My teeth are straight. I had to get the braces because I have still have baby canine in my upper teeth. They want to bring down the adult tooth. I have to get a gold chain on, the Expose and bond procedure, in about three weeks. I am really nervous about the surgery and how long it will take for the adult tooth to come down after the exposure. The big problem that worries me is that my adult tooth is horizontal – lucky me. How long will this take? And really how long will it take for my braces to be off? I have straight teeth which is upsetting. I thought I got to be one of the lucky ones that never had to get them. And never thought I would need them because of my straight teeth. But now I get them for my university years. Im really struggling with just having braces for 1 month. I really don’t like them. I have no confidence anymore and its hard for me to smile. Everyone says its worth it in the end, but to me this whole process is disheartening and stressful. I just really want to know if it will ultimately take three years to pull down my horizontal canine tooth and get the braces off.

Dear Enquirer,
I’m sorry to hear you are struggling with your braces. In general, if the canine is in the palate , but vertical in position, it can move up to 1mm a month, so would take a year or so to move into the correct position. If it is horizontally impacted, it is more complicated and would take more time.
Please confirm with your orthodontist the approximate timescales as I am not privy to your records and have not examined you. It will definitely be worth the wait to get your permanent tooth in place while you’re young, then you can enjoy the rest of your adulthood with beautiful straight teeth.

Hello,

I am 33 years old and i would love to get braces. My biggest issue with my teeth is one of my canine’s never grew in. The tooth is stuck up in the gum area in a horizontal position. One surgeon said he would be able to get it to come down and another said I would ruin my teeth if i tried going this route. Please help im so confused?
