I dont want to have braces when Im going to college

Q. I’m 15 years old and was told by my orthodontist this week that I’d need braces. The problems with my teeth which he stated in a letter were: (1) There’s a deep filling in the upper right 1st molar, this will need to be closely monitired. If it causes a problem it may need to be extracted or have root canal treatment. (2) There’s severe lower crowding and severe upper crowding (3) The upper front teeth are 3mm ahead of the lower front teeth (2-4mm is normal) (4) Upper and lower front teeth overlap excessively, a deep bite (5) Upper front teeth are left of center (6) Lower front teeth are right of center with the jaw relaxed (7) The molars are biting behind their ideal position He said I’d need to wear the braces for 2 years and a retainer after this. That’s my main problem as I’m half way through my second last year of school this would mean I’d still have the braces on when I’m goin to college and I have never liked the look of braces at all. Along with this treatment he say’s I first have to have four teeth removed (upper first premolars right and left, lower second premolars right and left). Would I be suitable for invisalign and if so how much in Ireland would it cost, how long would treatment take??? Thanks

A. Hi many thanks for your enquiry, the severity of your bite and position of your teeth from what you have stated makes me feel it may be alot of ask of invisalign to correct your problems. my advice would be you can have more discreet braces such as ceramic brackets and white wires so there look less obvious and you can also have lingual braces which would mean you would not be able to see the braces at all as they are placed on the back of the teeth. all these products are done privately and would cost from £3500 – £6000 dependant on where you chose for your treatment to be done. hope this is helpful.

The upper right lateral incisor tooth is absent and the upper set of teeth is narrower than the lower set. This means the cheek teeth on either side are biting inside the lower teeth. We have been told that the upper set of teeth would have to be widened to match the lower set. However this “widening” will mean a bigger gap where the upper incsor tooth is absent. This could be closed by a bridge or an implant.
To achieve this will require special braces to widen the ipper teeth over a 6 month period. Following this fixed braces would be fitted for a further 18 months.
My question is how much will this cost and is it guaranteed to correct the problem

Im 22 years old and had braces from the age 15-17, I subsequently had problems with my wisdom teeth and delayed in getting them out meaning my teeth have shifted. To me they now look crooked, though to others including my former orthodontist only slightly so. I have heard of lateral braces being a quick and simple way to re-align slightly crooked teeth. I was wondering how much a treatment like this would cost.

I’m sure it is possible to try invisalgn with an experienced orthodontist, as for cost, you will need to ask the dentist as fees vary according to the complexity of treatment

Invisalign sadly is not suitable for everyone and you would therefore need to have an examination for this. We have a dentist who works with us on Fridays who does free Invisalign consultations who may be able to help you. Also I do not believe in the removal of teeth to straighten your teeth – it can sometimes cause problems with the jaw after orthodontic treatment. As for cost, for Invisalign we charge anywhere between £1450 to £3500, depending on your case

You need to find a good dentist in Ireland that carries out invisalign so you can get another opinion. If you can afford private treatment than you will have to accept having metal braces.

you probably could have invisalign which could correct any crowding but centre line shifts are difficult to fix . i would go to the invisalign website find a dentist close to you and ring them with regards to costs for the consult. This will tell you exactly what can be done , costs and how long it will take

Although you give some detailed info, you would need to have a clinical exam before a detailed opinion. Both the Clearstep Orthodontic Positioners & Invisalign systems have websites with local users. Try one in your area for a second opinion.

It is virtually impossible to say if you are suitable for invisalign without looking at the mouth. I would recommend you have a second opinion if you wish to seek possibility of other options.

Clear positioners like Invisalign or Clearstep can be used in most cases although this description makes me wonder if fixed braces may be more efficient. tooth coloured or internally fixed are a possible answer. Costs are likely to be £4-6000 for complex private ortho.

i am looking to get invisalign, but have to admit that I am quite a clumsy forgetful person and am worried about what will happen if i loose the brace. Would i have to pay for a new one and how long would it take to get it. I know it seems stupid to be asking before i;ve even got the treatment but you have no idea of what a clutter brain i am! thanks

Hi, you would have to be very careful with your aligners as you will be responsible for them. If you lose them or break them through carelessness you will be charged for the production of new aligners.
