I am pregnant and suffering from gum disease, what should I do?

Q.
I am two mths pregnant and just found out i have gum disease, and i am losing the bone in my teeth,my dentist says i have lost about 40% so farwhich sounds like alot to me, my gums are bleeding everytime i brush, how do i go about treating this disease without it harming my baby, and will the bone loss to my teeth be permanant? could u tell me how i would have developed gum disease and is it treatable
A.
Dear Enquirer,
Gum disease is caused by poor oral hygiene primarily but smoking also predisposes to bone loss in the gums as well as a strong hereditary link, ie if your parents had gum disease then you may be more likely to have it.
During pregnancy, the inflammation can get worse, hence the bleeding. Don’t worry, you must see a hygienist regularly so that the condition can be managed and you are taught how to look after your gums and teeth.
You will not be harming the baby by having hygiene treatments, in fact you need to get treatment as soon as possible.
