I am in massive pain after veneers, what should I do?

Q.
I had crown lengthening procedure on 10 teeth followed by 10 porcelain veneers. I researched at length my chosen dentist and spent 9 months preparing with him prior to surgery and preparations. My crown lengthening was fine. My horrific pain started after first preparation. I have been in constant pain since July. My final veneers were fitted 6 weeks ago and look great. I have taken neuron round the clock and can both eat/drink hot/cold or chew as the pressure is too painful. My dentist has x-rayed and varnished with no results. My whole upper set of teeth throb at night. He is suggested removing two molar veneers to explore as he believes there could be leakage and referred pain. I have lost all confidence and I am reluctant to allow any further work without a second opinion. Please help as I am absolutely terrified of a lifetime of this pain. I do not know what to do or who to consult as I thought I had chosen the most qualified person in my area. Yours in anticipation.

Dental pain following tooth preparation for veneers is a recognised complication. Indeed, even dental fillings can result in pain after treatment due to irritation and inflammation in the nerves in the teeth. In most cases, the symptoms are mild and often disappear within a couple of months. In some cases the nerves do not recover and root canal treatment may be required in these teeth to eliminate the pain. This is a recognised risk that I personally discuss with all my patients before we undertake any veneer treatment. I would advise that your dentist, or another dentist (if you wish to have a second opinion) assesses the level of inflammation in the nerves of the teeth and carry out any root canal treatment if it is deemed necessary. A second opinion from a root canal expert, called an Endodontist, may help. Your dental practice may have an in-house Endodontist, or a recommended one.
Sometimes the bite can lead to dental pain after veneers. This should be carefully checked as well.
I have had my own teeth veneered and they took 1-2 months to settle down fully.
There is no harm in getting a second opinion, but choose somebody very experienced in veneers.
Hope that helps.
