I Am About To Have Braces And Surgery To Correct An Open Bite. I’d Like To Know If There Are Any Methods Of Curing Tongue Thrusts Also?

Q.
Hi Dr Hughes, I’m 17 and I have an open bite. I am about to get braces on in preparation the have the surgery to improve this problem. However one of the orthodontists I visited said he could not help me due to the problem being caused by my tongue (this was before I was considered for surgery). None of the other orthodontists I have seen have mentioned my tongue so I was wondering if I should mention it to them however I don’t want them to be like the first orthodontist and say they can’t do anything about it. Do you know any methods to get rid of tongue thrust? Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide me with.
A.
Hello and thank you for your question. It’s virtually impossible to get rid of a tongue thrust in an adult – what will be crucial for you is the very best retention protocols and to be aware that your retention advice should be followed religiously throughout your life. I hope the surgery goes well for you. Kind regards, Mark.
