I am a medical nurse RGN can I give botox

Q. I am a RGN and interested in undertaking course in cosmetic treatments. I do understand that the NMC/RCN are not favourable of b.toxin type A due to the nature of remote prescribing. However, who is the governing body of the people running the course ie: Doctors. And, is it only malpactice insurance that covers the nurse regardless?

A. My understanding is that it is either a medical or a dental procedure.

In the event of a problem your original registration body would carry out the disciplinary procedure. If a dentist runs a course that is “unsafe” the issue would be taken up by the GDC, if a doctor does similar it would be GMC and if guilty it would their personal registration at risk. I not an expert in this liability the best people to talk to in your case are your own registering body /GMC as this is where the professional side would be dealt with. The public & legal side would be proceed in tandem to professional conduct.

As you want to avoid all of this you would need professional indeminity that specifically covers you for the procedures you carry out. In dentistry one area covered as standard and other areas by additional premium. MDU MPS etc are not insurance & cannot guarantee cover but do provide run off cover ( if you stop doing the procedure and cease to pay premiums, you are still covered for retrospective cases that occurred during the cover but are claimed sometime later. Insurance is a contract that does guarantee cover but often charges the additional run off cover at the end .
