I am a complete dental phobic, but need dentures for awful teeth. Can I get this on the NHS?

Q. Hello, Well first of all I am a complete dental phobic !! But now I have I know got to get to my GP as my teeth are awful. I am so scared that I will have to have all my teeth out. And in Hospital. All my back teeth on both sides are awful on left and right, leaving bottom and top ones.in otherwords finding food very awkward to eat unless soft foods. But is it at all possible to get dentures on the NHS ? So I can eat? I am a total wreck, going through a bad time, fearful also bad hormones etc. Regards. Ps I also suffer from anxiety and panic attacks.,
A. You should seek a dentist who caterers for very nervous patients and will have various levels of sedation available to help you through your treatment

Could you please give me your personal opinion on the 3 appointment therapy service proved by Gentle Dental Group under general anaesthetic. 3TT-OLA-ITN? I have severe dental phobia and think this may be my only solution. I am told they are opening a centre in Dublin at the end of the month so I would not need to travel abroad to get this treatment. What are the implications of having dentures / partial dentures fitted only 2 weeks after the operation. Surely the dentures would not fit properly?

Hadley Says :

The patient can have the remaining teeth removed and the existing gaps filled with an implant supported bridge or denture, you may require sedation if you are quite anxious regarding dental treatment

You poor thing. Let me tell you, I think you have been a bit unfortunate as modern dentistry should not be at all painfull. Please let your dentist know your fears and discuss all the options with them Regards,

I wear a full plate on my upper mouth and yet to have the lower plate done. I am so scared of the dentist that I havent been for years. I had a drug addiction for a number of years which i beat 7 years ago. this also had an effect on my teeth. i would love a full set be it dentures of something else so i can smile properly again. cost is a big worry too but as im so frightened of the dentist id love to be able to be asleep when the procedure is carried out. Any advice?

Perhaps you should contact some local dentists to find out how much they charge for dentures as the cost and quality can vary.

I had a tooth extracted last Wednesday. It took 1 hour and 20 minutes to get the tooth out, ending with another dentist being called through to do it. He managed to extract it in minutes. Is this very unusual? I am still traumatised and have pain and numbness on my chin and lips.

I’m so sorry you had such a difficult experience . Some teeth which are very broken down can be very difficult to get out if the roots are brittle and decayed . What sometimes happens is that the dentist gets so far with the extraction and cant get any further . The second dentist comes and looks at it from a different perspective and a fresh approach . But actually the tooth was almost out and the second dentist makes it looks easier . However the continuing numbness is of concern and you should go back and report it.

I am terrified of going to the dentist,I haven’t been for over 15 years. My teeth are in a really bad way and are slowly breaking apart so I really need to see one but I cant even bring myself to phone NHS helpline to find a dentist. I am currently unemployed and cant afford any dental treatment. Is there any help for me?

Brielle Says :

Hello Perhaps NHS Direct is not the best place to find a dentist for yourself . If you are unemployed and on benefits then you will not have to pay charges , so that takes away that barrier . Have a look at http://www.dentalfearcentral.org to help you , and see which dentists in your area have been tried out by other nervous patients.

Hi I had a incomplete tooth extraction done yesterday as I went to a nhs emergent dentist for a tiny bit of tooth pain and foul taste.they took X-rays and said I had a infection so took half my tooth out but said the other would not come out so asked me to go bk the next day.went bk today but they tried hard to get it out but could not so have referred me to a nhs oral surgeon but said I have to wait til 2 June which is like 2 months.also they gave me a 5 day cos of amoxcillian.is this normal to wait so long.thank you

Leila Says :

For an NHS referral the wait can be as long as that . Hopefully if you have had antibiotics that will keep the problem at bay till you get the problem root out

I have gum recession due to years of smoking although for the last 7 years every 3 months I have visited a dental hygienist for a scale and polish. I stopped smoking 2 months ago and in the next two weeks I am due to see a dentist for implants and some dental work. I have about 20000 to spend and am worried I still don’t have enough funds

Layne Says :

Im not sure what the question is ? If you are worried that your treatment may come to more than you have available , then you need to make sure you have a treatment plan with costs , and arrangements how and when payments are to be made . If you havent seen the dentist yet then this should be gone into in detail with you

i had a back molar removed on Monday 22nd, due to and infection. Since the extraction i have been suffering rather severe stomach cramps, nausea and run down feeling. There is still some discomfort in the mouth area which i expected just wondering if the stomach pains could be due to the extraction. I take paracetamol for the pain. No medication was prescribed by the dentist

Marina Says :

Sorry you are feeling unwell . There are several possibilities . Its not likely the extraction is the cause . However you may have got the infection because you are a bit run down , so being a bit low on immunity you have been more vulnerable to other things . Taking painkillers and antibiotics may not help your stomach . It will pass , and I hope you feel better soon
