I Am 18 Years Old And My Teeth Are In Bad Shape. Will My NHS Dentist Cover The Cost?

Q.
Hi Dr Moore. I am 18 years old and my teeth are horrible, my bottom teeth aren’t straight and my top set are really over crowded. I have either the top right canine or lateral incisor missing (there is no gap though) and on the top right I have the adult canine behind the lateral incisor and my baby canine is still there. When I was young my dentist never mentioned braces but now I’m older it’s really affected me. Will my dentist through the NHS cover the cost of braces? Thank you.
A.
Hello and thank you for getting in touch. Unfortunately, no. Braces through the NHS are for under 16’s only. You could ask your dentist to refer you to a local dental hospital, but waiting lists are lengthy. The other option would be to obtain a free consultation from an experienced orthodontist in your area and find out how much it will cost. From there you may be able to pay in instalments or have a price to save up to. I hope this helps to clarify your situation. Kind regards, Dr Andrew Moore.
