How Long After A Tooth Extraction Do I Have To Wait Before I Can Have An Implant?

Q.
Hi Mark, I have just had a tooth extraction because of a failed root canal where the tooth actually fractured causing discomfort and my only option was an extraction as I was informed. I was wondering how long it would be before I would be able to have an implant? It is one of my upper molars. The thing is you can see the crater when I smile, and I usually smile a lot because visually I have lovely straight teeth and white too, so could you advise me on the best course of action regarding this. Are there any treatment types that could work? Thank you.
A.
Hi, thank you for writing in. If the area is not infected then you can have an implant placed almost immediately. Sometimes a bone graft or ‘sinus lift’ is needed for upper molar teeth. If there has been an infection then you sometimes need to wait up to 12 weeks but this is best to discuss with your implant dentist. I hope that answers you enquiry. Kind regards,  Mark.
