How good are over the counter whitening treatments in comparison to whitening from a dentist?

Q.
Hi Rob,
I would like just a little advice on the best route for 2 issues. I drink quite a lot of coffee and my teeth are an ‘0ff-white- colour. I would really like a gleaming white smile now and wondered what the best way would be to achieve it? About a year or so ago I purchased Dr George’s Dental White, but have only used on a few occasions as im very sceptical of any damage? Is this a good product? I have also just recently purchased the Transformulas professional whitening kit, and after a few appliances it does ‘appear’ to have made a difference. Is professional surgery really the only way to achieve my goal, or are these products worthwhile?
I also have a very slight gap between my top front two teeth and would like this closed, any advice also would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much for your time
A.
There are a bewildering array of over the counter products and the general rule is that most do not make enough of a difference to justify the price. A small proportion are dangerous and damage the teeth. UK Law generally restricts the sale of the chemical used by Dentists. You are therefore best to do to a dentist.

Closure of Gaps by tooth coloured filling can in some cases be achieved by aesthetically bonding without drilling. Veneers or orthodontics are also an option.
