The hep b status affects the operator more than you due to the possibility of transmission, but does not affect the prognosis of root canal, which if not done by a specialist usually has a success rate of approx 60-70%. If it does not work the tooth will be lost.
A root canal can buy you 5-10 years of life from the tooth if you also have it crowned which is usually advised.
If ther is no other decay on adjacent teeth on both arches the pain is likely from underlying infection from the tooth with a cavity, this will be attempted to be resolved by. Root canal.
Cavities can be prevent by god oral hygiene and decreasing frequency of sugar in your diet.
